摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a reflection type liq. crystal display device restraining the current consumption by turning on and off a light source on an auxiliary rear side in accordance with surrounding brightness, while obtaining a display which is bright even in dark surroundings and does not generate a parallax. SOLUTION: This liq. crystal display device is provided with a liq. crystal panel which is filled with a liq. crystal material in a gap between a TFT(thin film transistor) substrate 10 forming a TFT on a insulative substrate 10 and a counter electrode substrate 20 corresponding to it and in the TFT substrate 10 side of the panel, a phase different plate, a polarizer plate and an auxiliary rear side light source are provided and in the counter electrode substrate 20 side of the panel, a polarizer plate is provided. Then, the device is housed in a space between a front case and a rear case in which each of parts such as the liq. crystal display panel is fitted. This front case is provided with a brightness measuring device measuring brightness of light emitted from an observing display screen and when a brightness measured value measured by the device for light which is emitted from the display screen when turning on the light source in the auxiliary rear face side, is greater than a brightness measured value of light emitted from the display screen when turning off the light source on the auxiliary rear face side, the light source on the auxiliary rear face side is automatically turned on.
