发明名称 DISCOTIC LIQUID CRYSTAL ELEMENT AND ALIGNING METHOD
摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a columnar structure of a discotic liquid crystal uniformly in the perpendicular direction to a substrate by forming a discotic liquid crystal layer in such a manner that plural side chains of the discotic liquid crystal molecules in the layer are aligned perpendicular to the substrate on the interface of the substrate. SOLUTION: For example, when a perpendicular aligning agent (ODSE) is applied for the perpendicular aligning treatment, alkyl long chains 31 of ODSE molecules are aligned to stand on the surface of the substrate. Then alkyl long chains 32 of azacrown molecules which strongly interact with ODSE change the direction to be aligned parallel to the alkyl long chains 31 of ODSE, and as a result, strong aligning force is given to the cores 33 of azacrown molecules to be parallel to the interface. The liquid crystal molecules form self-organized columns by the interface of each other. Thereby, a monodomain structure with each column aligned perpendicular to the substrate surface can be obtd.
