PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve measurement efficiency by reducing wait time until measurement after immersing an optical fiber preform in a matching oil in a method for measuring the distribution of the refractive index of the optical fiber preform. SOLUTION: An optical fiber preform 1 is immersed in a matching oil 6 in an oil tank 5, measurement light is applied to the optical fiber preform 1, and the distribution of the refractive index of the optical fiber preform 1 is measured. In this case, the optical fiber preform 1 is accommodated in a temperature treatment tank 2 that is separate from the oil tank 5 in advance and temperature treatment is made where the temperature of the optical fiber preform 1 is brought closer to the temperature of the matching oil 6, then the optical fiber preform 1 is immersed in the matching oil 6 in the oil tank 5, and the distribution of the refractive index of the optical fiber preform 1 is measured.
