PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To execute spatial frequency enhancing processing to an original image signal, which is obtained by a digital still camera, by a suitable processing condition. SOLUTION: The machine type of a digital camera used at the time of obtaining the original image signal to be a processing object is inputted (step 100) to prepare the non-sharp mask signal of the original image signal (step 102) to read a contrast table and a density depending table according to the machine type of the digital camera from a hard disk (step 104). Continually, based on the contrast table, the density depending table, the non-sharp mask signal and the original picture signal, sharpness enhancing processing is executed so that the maximum value of the response of the spatial frequency characteristic of a picture signal after the sharpness enhancing processing may become a value in a range from 1.5-to 3.0-fold with respect to the spatial frequency characteristics of the original image signal (step 106).
