PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original reader that can transmit satisfactory image data when the original reader acts as facsimile equipment for reading an original, while adopting an always stable white color for a read reference color and that can form image data properly matching with the width of an original, when the original reader acts a scanner to read the original. SOLUTION: In this original reader, a read reference roller 16 in a background color or an original 6 or in a white reference color at reading is formed on a contact sensor 15 with a width to cover an entire read width of the contact sensor 15. A black Mylar(R) 16a and a white Mylar 16c are adhered on a surface of an elastic member 16a covering a shaft 16d by a double-sided tape to form the read reference roller 16. When the original reader which acts as a scanner reads an original, the black Mylar 16b is placed on an upper side of the contact sensor 15. When the original reader acting as a facsimile equipment reads an original, the white Mylar 16c is placed on the upper side of the contact sensor 15.
