PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording and reproducing device that can record digitally an inputted analog signal and can retrieve recorded information by using a clear cue review picture with a simple configuration. SOLUTION: Magnetic heads 18a, 18b record a luminance signal Fia and a chrominance signal Fca from an analog recording system unit 35 for a program-search time at a recording time onto a program-search information recording track on a magnetic tape 17 and a luminance signal Fid and a chrominance signal Fcd from a digital recording system unit 37 are compressed and recorded onto an information recording track of the magnetic tape 17 after the lapse of the program-search time. At a retrieval time, the program-search information recording track is continuously fed fast and scanned for reproduction and is displayed as a review picture on a monitor. In the case of reproducing retrieved recording information, the program-search part is reproduced from the program-search information recording track and the part after the program-search part is reproduced from the information recording track. The recorded information is retrieved smoothly in a short time by using the clear cue review picture free from distortion through a simple circuit of a low manufacture cost that can record a broadband video signal for a long time.
