PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable electronic device with which a user can easily see the display of operation keys and no limit is placed on the number of functions to be provided to each operation key. SOLUTION: Each of a plurality of key entry modes is selectively set to the portable electronic device through a mode switching operation. A data entry device 6, having a plurality of operation keys, is placed on a front side of a casing 1. The data entry device 6 consists of a transparent cover film 62, a transparent touch panel 61 and a liquid crystal display panel 5, and the cover film 62 has a plurality of domes 64. Each dome 64 can be deformed elastically into an inverted position in contact with a touch entry section of the panel 61 through a depression operation and an operation key section consists of each dome section 64 and each touch entry section. A function, in response to a mode of the operation key section, is selectively displayed on the liquid crystal display panel 5 in each mode and the display can be seen through the transparent touch panel 61 and the domes 64.
