PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make proper a carrying speed and a read timing of an original in the image reader. SOLUTION: An original 117 is carried by a feed roller 101 and a carrier roller 102, read by a CIS (sheet-fed type line sensor) 103 and discharged by a discharge roller 114. Rotating bodies 104, 107 and a photointerrupter 106 detect a carrying speed at a read position. When the detected speed is not proper, a CPU 110 controls the drive speed of an original carrying motor 111 to be a prescribed speed or controls the read timing of the CIS 103 in matching with the carrying speed.
