PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method having a length gauge for measuring the length of a water rod of the adjustable length when assembling a nuclear fuel bundle. SOLUTION: This length gauge 28 contains a slender standard rod 34, an indicator positioning block 26 for carrying the gauge 28 and an indicator set block. The indicator set block is installed in the indicator positioning block 26, and the gauge 28 is set to 0 at a known distance between a movable element of the gauge and one reference surface. A water rod is installed on a bonding plate 12, and the gauge 28 is used to measure the length of the water rod of the adjustable length. The indicator positioning block 26 receives a part of a bonding rod of the water rod in the recess. The standard rod 34 engages with the bonding plate 12, and a gage pin (movable element) 32 engages with the opposite side end part of the standard rod 34. A deviation of the length of the water rod from the design length is indication on the gauge 28.
