PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manufacture a dial of technically artistic beauty on a small lot basis by forming a thin transparent ink-accepting layer on a surface of a metallic plated with gold or silver and forming letters and pictures on a surface of the ink-accepting layer by an ink-jet recording method. SOLUTION: A surface of a brass 1 worked into a cylindrical shape as a base board is plated with gold or silver 2. An ink-accepting layer 3 capable of absorbing ink is formed on the plating surface by coating it with a film of water-soluble polymer such as polyvinyl alcohol. Pixels 6 are formed on the ink-accepting layer 3 by discharging ink drops 5 out of a nozzle 4 of an ink-jet head. The light reflected by the plating surface is transmitted through portions where ink is absorbed or portions where ink is not absorbed of the ink-accepting layer and beautiful metallic luster can be obtained.
