PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form flat silver halide grains small in thickness, small in the variation coefficient of the thickness and projected area diameter and high in silver chloride content by making the amount of gelatin present during the formation of silver halide grains in a specified amount of silver or less of the total amount of silver used for forming the grains and a specified compound present after the end of formation of the silver halide grains to a specified amount per one mol of silver. SOLUTION: The relation of gelatin present during the formation of silver halide grains in <=20% of the total amount of silver used for forming the grains and a compound represented by formulae I-III is in a specified region and the compound represented by the formulae I-III present after the end of grain formation is in an amount of >=0.002 mol/mol of the total silver. In the formulae I-III, R1 is an alkyl, alkenyl or aralkyl group, each of R2-R6 is H atom or a substituent: X- is a counter anion, each of A1-A4 is a nonmetallic atomic group necessary to complete an N-containing hetero ring, B is a divalent bonding group, each of (m) and (n) is 0 or 1 and X is an anion.
