PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a picture display device with a simple constitution by which the display of a bright picture is restarted even right after the completion of picture display. SOLUTION: A rear projection type television 1 constituted as a device using a metal halide lamp 81 as a light source is provided with a turning-on circuit 61 which uses the ignition voltage of two levels, high and low. It is turned on by low ignition voltage applied to when the temperature of the lamp 81 is low, and is turned on by high ignition voltage applied to when the temperature of the lamp 81 is high. Thus, the lamp 81 is surely turned on even when the temperature of it is high right after turning off, and also the restarting of the picture display is made possible even right after the completion of the picture display.
