This invention is a rapid infusion system for rapidly delivering blood, and/or volume expanding fluid to a patient. The rapid infusion system includes a rapid infusion device (10) which comprises in combination a portion which includes an adjustable drive means (16), a related control means (11, 12, 13, 19, 20) therefor, a portion (15) which includes components that come into contact with the fluid infused to the patient, and optionally wherein said system can be portable.
