The device has a number of controllable light sources (LED) arranged in at least one row and formed into groups with associated light source control devices (IC). The control devices are connected in series, with outputs feeding inputs, and data are only fed in from outside to the first control device's input. At least two groups of connected light source control devices receive parallel data from a character generator controller. The light sources and the light source control devices are mounted on a carrier (TR) and are directly electrically interconnected via conductors, esp. bonds.
