The reactor has a basin shaped receptacle (20) housed below the reactor core (12). The receptacle contains a deformable inner metallic lattice structure (38) that allows the circulation of water. Spherical containers (48) are housed between the cross bars of the lattice work and contain a material able to lower the temperature of the corium when brought into contact with it.
