Arbitration system for controlling access to common resource uses OR tree and arbitration to determine highest priority and generates access request accordingly

A number of service request nodes (15 to 21) are assigned a respective priority number and produce a request signal when access to the common resource is required. Two OR trees (75,78) are responsive to the request signal to produce two output signals that are supplied to an access controller (38) for performing an arbitration to determine the highest priority number and generate an access request signal for access to the common resource.
