The assembly has a headliner panel (3) that has an aperture with a step indent section (7) and a console (1) that has first and second wing portions (9,10) which are configured to engage the sides of the aperture. One wing (9) of the console engages a shoulder (8) of the aperture and the console is pivoted so that it is aligned with the headliner panel and then slid along until the second wing (10) of the console engages the step indent section. The console may be secured either with adhesive or with an interference grip formed as a result of constriction between the wing portions and the upper portions of the console. Latch detent elements (11,12) may also be provided to prohibit the console from sliding backwards out of the aperture.
