Pseudoceramides (I) which are N-acyl 2-amino-1-alkanol or 1-amino-2-alkanol derivatives are new. Compounds of formula (Ia) or (Ib) are new: x = 9-17; y = 4-34; R1 = H or OR4; R2 = H, Me, Et or Q; Q = (CH2-CHOH-CH2O)zH; R3 = H or Q; R4 = H or OOC(CH2)wCH3; z = 1-6; w = 2-34; provided that R2 and R3 are not both Q. An Independent claim is also included for a process for preparing compounds of formula (Ia) or (Ib), without the indicated proviso.
