PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To scan a scanning object efficiently with high precision by automatically and accurately detecting a surrounding of the scanning object. SOLUTION: The scanning size decision device includes a light source 11 for transmitting an initial optical signal, a detection unit 21 that generates an initial detection signal corresponding to the initial optical signal and a composite detection signal according to the scanning size of a scanning object 3, and a signal processing unit that decides the scanning size of the scanning object 3 by calculating the initial detection signal and the composite detection signal. In the scanning size decision method, the initial optical signal is transmitted, the initial optical signal is received, the initial detection signal is generated, the initial optical signal is received, the composite detection signal is generated according to the scanning size of the scanning object 3, and the initial detection signal and the composite detection signal are calculated so as to decide the scanning size of the scanning object 3.
