Object marking uses a low vapor pressure room temperature solid marker which releases a detectable gas on heating. An object is marked using a low vapor pressure room temperature solid marking substance which is heated, applied to the object and cooled to the solid state and which, when reheated, releases a gaseous substance detectable by a sensor. An Independent claim is also included for apparatus for carrying out the above marking process. Preferred Features: Reheating is carried out using a hot air blower.
