A sensor (3) connected to an evaluation device is fitted in a pick-up area (4) between two conductor branches (5) for a current-bearing conductor (2), which are set in parallel to each other and spaced but transverse to the current direction (Pf1). Two sensors have their detection direction transverse to a first surface oriented parallel to the longitudinal direction of the conductor branches and at right angles to a second surface. The conductor can be switched for a rectified current direction in both current branches. The sensors are arranged in different measuring field planes parallel to the second surface. The evaluation device has a unit to form the difference between the two sensor signals.
