A method of improving immune function in a mammal. The mammal may be a pregnant woman. The mammal is administered a nutritional composition which contains soy. In the case of pregnant women, the improvement in immune function is transmitted to the child or children and hence the immune response in the child or children is increased. The nutritional composition also includes zinc, phytoestrogens and iron.
