A rewriting control unit is operated based on a rewriting command transmitted from a rewriting command unit (6). When the identification (ID) code transmitted from the rewriting command unit (6) is in accord with the intrinsic code stored by the memory unit, the content of the memory is rewritten. A rewriting control unit (6) is provided in an electronic control unit to regulate rewrite operation of the contents of memory in a memory unit. Several electronic control units (1-3) are connected through a connector (7) by which a rewriting command unit is either inserted or removed.
