摘要 <p>The invention is a system, and method for deriving the respiratory rate of an individual from the raw, unfiltered opto-plethysmograph signal output by a standard pulse oximeter. The components of the system consist of a pulse oximeter (110), and a processor device (120) that processes the opto-plethysmograph signal output from the pulse oximeter. The raw unfiltered opto-plethysmograph signals are processed to remove the high frequency heart rate, and the low frequency components from the raw signal to generate a processed signal that contains primarily the desired respiratory variations. Several feature extraction algorithms are then applied to the processed signal to identify those peaks of the processed signal that truly represent respiratory peaks. The respiratory rate is then calculated based on the identified repiratory peaks, and averaged over a predetermined number of breaths.</p>
