The integrity or authenticity of a digital data work is established by changing the digital data work according to a particular algorithm so that some or all of its constituent parts possess a measurable characteristic; that measurable characteristic is altered if any unauthorised alterations to the digital data work are subseqently carried out. That alteration can then be detected using a detection process.
