摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the starting ability of an internal combustion engine upon a start thereof at which low temperature combustion is carried out, while simultaneously inhibiting emission of soot and NOX and to complete warm-up of catalyst at an earlier time. SOLUTION: Low temperature operation in which the volume of exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) gas fed into a combustion chamber 5 is larger than the volume of the EGR gas with which the volume of generated soot becomes peak so as prevent soot from being substantially generated, can be carried out, and catalyst 25 is incorporated in an exhaust pipe 24. Upon cranking in which a low temperature combustion is carried out, the fuel injection timing with which fuel is injected from the injection valve 6 is advanced in comparison with the time, except cranking time in which a low temperature combustion is carried out, or warming-up time of the catalyst after the cranking, in order to enhance the starting ability of the engine during starting of the engine. During warm-up time of the catalyst after cranking, during which lower temperature combustion is carried out, the fuel injection timing is lagged in comparison with the time, except cranking time in which low temperature combustion is carried out, and warming-up time of catalyst, thereby it is possible to complete the warm-up of the catalyst at an earlier time.
