PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable easy control of voltage retention with little reduction in specific resistance and eliminate faulty displays such as unevenness and burn-in phenomenon by blending a peroxide decomposer with a liquid crystal mixture. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal composition of which voltage retention can be easily controlled in a range of 40-90% with little reduction in specific resistance is obtained by blending 0.0001-3 wt.% of at least one peroxide decomposer selected from the group of compounds having nitrogen, phosphorus, boron or sulfur with a liquid crystal mixture. Faulty displays such as unevenness in orientation by foreign particles and burn-in phenomenon by long-time lighting are eliminated and power consumption is cut back such that it is not too much. As the peroxide decomposer, triphenylphosphine, triphenylphosphite, trialkylphenylphosphites, trimethylphosphate, diphenylhydrogenphosphite, hexamethylphosphoroamide, triphenylborate and the like are especially preferred.
