PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize high speed recording by setting the number of pixels recordable within a time equal to a common multiple of the record timing period of a recording means and the scan timing period of a scanning means as one block, and synchronizing the record timing period and the scan timing period in units of block. SOLUTION: When power is turned on, a control section 23 calculates a least common multiple of an inputted record period and the step pulse period of a main motor 103 and determines the number of pixels recordable within a time of least common multiple by dividing the calculated least common multiple by the record period. Position of an ink jet recording head 101 is then detected by checking the output of a carrier sensor 14 and recording is effected by means of a recorder when it is determined that the recording head 101 is located at an initial position. The number of pixels recordable within the time of least common multiple is set at one block and the record timing period is synchronized with the scan timing period in units of block based on the output from a record timing generating timer 107.
