A filling station (1) in a tobacco packaging machine accommodates a fan-shaped stack (3) of envelope-type tobacco packages. Each package has a greater thickness on the side turned away from the closure edge than on the side of the closure edge. The filling station is formed with two curved conduits (9,11) between which a stack of tobacco packages can move. At the front, provided with suction components (13) are devices (15) which only remove the lowermost packaging from the stack, passing it to further devices for filling with tobacco. At the front of the machine is a closed transporter movable in stages, provided preferably with a number of upright auxiliary magazines (23), each provided with double fan-shaped conduits (25,27) to accommodate a stack of packages. The transporter is so positioned in relation to the filling station that one of the auxiliary magazines is in one of the transporter positions above the filling station. The transporter can be an endless belt or a rotary table.
