PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing L-glutamic acid efficiently at a low cost through obtaining L-glutamic acid-producing bacteria having the high ability to produce L-glutamic acid. SOLUTION: This method for producing L-glutamic acid comprises culturing in a medium such microorganisms as to belong to the genus Klebsiella, Erwinia or Pantoea and have the ability to produce L-glutamic acid and obtain the L-glutamic acid thus produced from the resulting culture solution; wherein the strain to be used is preferably such one as to decline or lack in the activity of an enzyme catalyzing the reaction for producing compounds other than L- glutamic acid through branching from the L-glutamic acid biosynthesis route, or be raised in the activity of an enzyme catalyzing the L-glutamic acid biosynthesis.
