PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent execution of erroneous inter-vehicular distance control if, when inter-vehicular distance control is performed by means of an actual inter-vehicular physical quantity detected on the basis of reflected waves of transmit waves irradiated, the actual inter-vehicular physical quantity does not properly reflect behavior relative to the object of control such as a preceding vehicle. SOLUTION: A change in relative speed is checked to determine whether or not it is abnormal (S404), and if the change in relative speed takes a value considered to be not attainable under a normal controlled condition, the abnormality of the change in relative speed is established (S406: YES). Then whether or not a collision occurred is determined (S405), and if a value that is out of applicability of a control system is detected in a range wherein situation is supposed to be handled by a vehicle driver's control, than a collision is determined to have occurred (S405: YES). If either of those requirements is met, a relative speed abnormality flag is established (S412), and the relative speed is set at 0 km/h (S414). Once the relative speed abnormality flag is established, the request for warning is canceled.
