PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic transmission for a bicycle constituted to put into low gear only in the case of traveling on a slope in real need of gear down without performing shift action in the case of slight ruggedness. SOLUTION: This automatic transmission is provided with a transmission 2 provided at a bicycle, a slope sensor 3 for detecting the grade of the road surface; and a transmission control part 4 receiving signals from the slope sensor 3 and a distance sensor 5 to actuate the transmission 2. The transmission control part 4 has a shift time delay part 6 for shifting the transmission 2 in a low gear direction after traveling specified distance after receiving a signal from the slope sensor 3 to the effect that there is a slope.
