PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject composition capable of resolving the endocrine disruptor problem involving bisphenol A, good in coating operability, capable of giving coating film of high performance by using, as base resin, an epoxy resin with its terminal modified with a carboxylic acid or phenol compound. SOLUTION: This coating composition is such one as to contain, as base resin, a bisphenol A-type epoxy resin modified product having, on average, 0.5-1.8 per molecule of modified group of formula I or formula II (R1 is H or a 1-15C hydrocarbon group; R2 is a 1-15C carboxylic acid residue except carboxyl group) on the molecular terminal of a bisphenol A-type epoxy resin, an epoxy equivalent of 2,500-30,000 and number-average molecular weight of 3,000-40,000. The above modified product is obtained, for example, by reaction of a phenol compound of formula III and/or a carboxylic acid of formula IV as modifier with a bisphenol A-type epoxy resin with an epoxy equivalent of 2,000-15,000 and number-average molecular weight of 2,500-39,500.
