PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic detecting method for tool life which not only detects the tool life full-automatically by detecting the abrasion and the chipping of a chip, but also can foresee the tool life consequently. SOLUTION: A piezoelectric body thin film 2 to convert a mechanical energy to an electrical energy is covered on a tip 1 in a cutting tool. This thin film 2 is provided by its end edge at the abrasion limit of the tip, and covered at the side separating from an edge 1b on the tip. In this thin film 2, an electric signal is generated to the thin film 2 by the chipping and/or the abrasion of the above tip, reaching to the thin film 2, which are generated in the cutting process, and the tool life is detected by this electrical signal.
