PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively prevent a lid of a glove box from being opened by improving a locking device for the glove box disposed at an instrument panel of an automobile. SOLUTION: This glove box opening preventing device is provided with a lid 10 closably provided at an opening of an instrument panel 2; a hook 18 rotatably provided at the lid 10; a striker 12 provided at the opening edge part and engaged with and disengaged from an engaging part of the hook 18; and a stopper part ST provided at the hook 18 and formed in such a way that the striker 12 is not normally positioned on the own rotating locus consequent to the rotation of the hook 18 but the striker 12 is positioned on the rotating locus to impede the own rotation when the striker 12 is moved toward the front of a vehicle by impact applied to the instrument panel 12. When the instrument panel 2 is deformed, the striker 12 moves and abuts on at least the stopper part ST to impede the rotaiton of the hook 18 by the striker 12, thus preventing the lid from being opened.
