In a process for the partial oxidation of a hydrocarbon (e.g cyclohexane to cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone) with O2 in presence of a B compound, in which the resulting borate esters are hydrolysed giving an organic product phase and an aqueous phase, H3BO3 of particle size 100-1000 microns is crystallized from the latter, separated, passed to a dehydrator, formed into a slurry in an organic medium, and heated to give a slurry of HBO2 of crystal size 3-60 microns which is then withdrawn. In practice, the organic medium is the hydrocarbon and the HBO2 slurry is recycled to the oxidation. Other specified hydrocarbons are methylcyclohexane, cyclopropane and cyclooctane.ALSO:Metaboric acid of crystal size 3-60 microns is obtained by hydrolysing orthoborate esters, separating an aqueous phase from an organic phase containing alcohol (e.g. cyclohexanol), crystallizing H3BO3 of particle size 100-1000 microns from the aqueous phase, separating, passing to a dehydrator, forming into a slurry in an organic medium (e.g. cyclohexane) and heating to give a slurry of the desired product.
