PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a vinyl chloride-based polymer by which the formation of foamy coarse particles produced during polymerization is suppressed and the vinyl chloride-based polymer having a high bulk specific gravity is produced with a high productivity when the heat removal load on a reflux condenser is increased to carry out high-speed polymerization in a large-sized polymerizer. SOLUTION: A prescribed dispersion stabilizer is used and a prescribed amount of a compound having mercapto group and hydroxyl group is added during a period from the initial polymerization to 10% polymerization conversion rate when the suspension polymerization of a vinyl chloride-based monomer is carried out in the presence of an oil-soluble polymerization initiator in an aqueous medium under polymerization conditions in which the amount of heat removal with a reflux condenser during the polymerization is regulated to >=30% based on the total amount of heat removal and the polymeriaztion time is regulated to <=6 h by using a polymerizer additionally equipped with a stirrer, an external jacket and the reflux condenser and having >=100 m3 internal volume.
