PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an escalator with wheelchair steps that can be installed in the longitudinal space of a main framework compatible with one for standard escalators. SOLUTION: A wheelchair carrying surface 31 is formed by a plurality of wheelchair steps 20 and others. Just before a landing 4 at an upper main- framework end 3, a movable mechanism 22 and the like including the wheelchair steps 20 and others forming the wheelchair carrying surface 31 are retracted by a working device into a horizontally moving region A of the conveyor surface of a conveyor belt 6 brought shorter than the horizontal surface of the wheelchair carrying surface 31 along the main framework. The shortened horizontally moving region A of the conveyor surface of the conveyor belt 6 at the upper main-framework end 3 permits such easier installation of the wheelchair-steps-equipped escalator as demands no especially widened intervals between supports of both main-framework ends.
