Submerged-burner heat exchange apparatus intended for the heating of liquid nitrogen in coils 25 to produce gaseous nitrogen, comprises a tank 10 containing water, a burner 17 mounted above the tank, a downcomer tube 20 from the burner with openings 22 at its lower end, the latter tube and the coils 25 which surround said tube being immersed in the water. A tubular baffle 35 surrounds the coils 25 and forms, with the downcomer tube 20 an annular space for ascending hot combustion gas and circulating water. The upper end of this space forms a weir which has top openings 36 for the outflow of gas and overflow of liquid. The tank 10 is filled with water to a level 12 maintained by a control device 39. The tank has a water inlet pipe 13 with a control 15 responsive to water temperature, and an outlet pipe 14. Combustion gases from the burner 17 escape from openings 22 into the annular space containing the coils 25. These extend from an inlet header 26 to an outlet header 27. In operation, the water heated by the burner gases rapidly rises within the tubular baffle 35 to a level 12a before overflowing the weir, and circulating downwardly in the outer part of the tank 10 to the lower end of the baffle. The waste gases leave by duct 37.</p>
