PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide with a minimum modification effort and cost an oven cover structure for coke ovens, which effectively reduces the generation of gas leakage from the edge of the oven cover without greatly changing the form of an oven cover refractory, and almost without sacrificing the heat- insulating property. SOLUTION: An oven cover 2 for a carbonization chamber 1 in a coke oven is devised as follows. An oven cover refractory 21 is constructed to have a tapered form. In a horizontal cross section view, the width of the rear side, i.e., the coal layer C side of the refractory 21 is built wide to allow only small spaces between the sides of the refractory 21 and oven walls 11, and also the width of the front side, i.e., the oven door hardware 22 side of the refractory 21 is built narrowly to ensure large spaces between the sides of the refractory 21 and the oven walls 11. Furthermore, the tapered sides of the refractory 21 are maintained flat.
