Heading A1M A combined slaughtering and blood' extracting device comprises a tube 2 having at one end 3 a blade 9 and at the other end 4 a connection for a suction hose 6 and wedge brackets 14 for holding the incision open, means also being provided whereby the device may be anchored in the animal's throat to enable the blood to be removed by suction. The brackets 14 each comprise two walls between which an L-shaped anchoring member 19 is pivoted, the lower part of the brackets being shaped to define a channel into which a collar 26 can be moved to pivot member 19 from its inoperative position in which part 20 lies between the walls of bracket 14 to its operative position in which it can engage the sides of the incision. The collar 26 is moved by means of a slidable bush 27 and is held in position by a lever, 32 movable by means of push button 36 actuation of which operates switch 38 to bring into operation a suction source attached to hose 6. A pressure plate 25 is stationarily mounted on tube 2 and seals against the animal's throat and arcuate strips forming further wedge members are attached at 13<SP>1</SP> , 13<SP>11</SP> to the device. The anchor member may comprise a pivoted pin the movement of which is controlled by a handle attached to a ring member surrounding the tube, the ring member having a second handle for operating the switch controlling the application of, suction. The animals are arranged headdownwards on a conveyer and the blood collected through tubes 6 passes to a central collecting point. Sterilizing lamps are provided for sterilizing the blades 9 after use.
