PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure a reliable chip sealing operation and improve sealing characteristics by providing a recessed slot in the bottom of the seal groove, that extends widthwise across the seal groove, and a cutout that communicates with this recessed slot from an inner tip of the lap. SOLUTION: A recessed slot 14 is arranged so as to extend widthwise in the bottom of seal grooves 3d, 4d of the initial wound portion of the lap. A cutout 15 is also arranged so as to extend from tips 3e, 4e of the inner side (high pressure side) bank portions 3e, 4e of the seal grooves 3d, 4d and communicate with the recessed slot 14. In this construction, high-pressure gas from the high-pressure side of the lap enters through the cutout 15, passes through the recessed slot 14, and reaches the rear face of chip seals 12, 13. Due to the pressure differential with the low pressure side, this gas reliably operates the chip seals 12, 13. This action reliably seals a clearance 16 in the axial direction between end plates 3a, 4a opposite to the tip of the lap. The effective operation of the chip seals 12, 13, improves functional reliability and sealing characteristics.
