Comprises a mixture of 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and N-(hydroxymethyl) acetamide, the ratio between the acetamide and the said isothiazolone derivative being from 23:1 to 27:1. The process comprises preparing an aqueous solution of acetamide, the addition of paraformaldehyde with constant stirring and increasing temperature until a homogeneous mixture is obtained, adjustment of the pH to between 7 and 10, cooling the mixture at ambient temperature, and adding a mixture of 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 2-methyl- 4-isothiazolin-3-one in a ratio of between 2.5:1 and 3.5:1. Use of the composition as a biocide -fungicide in water-based paints, resins for the preparation of the said paints, adhesives, sizing pastes, calcium carbonate suspensions and paper coatings.
