Acetals and carboxylic acids are obtained by heating carboxylic acid esters with formaldehyde in the presence of acidic catalysts. Suitable acidic catalysts are, for example, sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, p-toluene sulphonic acid and cation exchangers. Examples are given of the conversion of (a) methylacetate to methylal and acetic acid; (b) b -methoxypropionic acid methyl ester to b -methoxypropionic acid and methylal, (c) b -ethoxy propionic acid ethyl ester to formaldehyde diethylacetal and b -ethoxy-propionic acid; and (d) n-decanoic acid methyl ester to n-decanoic acid and methylal.
