PURPOSE: Controlling method and device for equalization of an optical reproducing signal are provided to automatically adjust band filtering characteristic of an equalizer according to change in frequency band of the reproducing signal. CONSTITUTION: An edge detect unit(70) detects edge element of an output signal from a comparator(50). A counter(80) performs counting by being reset by an impulse signal from the edge detect unit. Herein, the detect unit and the counter detect width of a signal outputted from the comparator. Moreover, a window unit(90) outputs a minimum value in the counter to a first register(100). A second register(110) stores a prior signal width value. A comparator(120) compares values stored in the registers for resetting the value in the second register in case of difference of the values. An equalizer control unit(130) establishes an optimum equalizing characteristic by using the value stored in the second register.
