PURPOSE: An apparatus for converting a utopia level-1 into a utopia level-2 in an ATM communication is provided to facilitate interface by mutually converting both levels in case that a physical layer and an ATM layer support different level of utopia interfaces. CONSTITUTION: In an ATM apparatus for interfacing a device which provides 'n' number of utopia level-1 interfaces and a device which supports a single utopia level-w interface, 'n' number of byte-word converter(520a¯520d) respectively receive a data of a byte unit from the utopia level-1 interface device and converts it into a word unit, 'n' number of word FIFOs(530a¯530d) respectively receive a data of word unit from the byte-word converter and stores it, a Round-robin address generator(560) generates 'n' number of discriminate addresses by a Round-robin method, a multiplexer(540) selects one of outputs of the word FIFOs and multiplexes it according to an address generated by the Round-robin address generator, a utopia level-1 interface controller(510) receives a transmission enable(TxEnb*) signal for handshaking of a utopia level-1 mode from the utopia level-1 interface device and provides a transmission cell available(TxClav) signal to the utopia level-1 interface device, and a utopia level-2 interface controller(550) receives a transmission cell available(TxClav) signal for handshaking of a utopia level-2 mode from the utopia level-2 interface device, receives a transmission address(TxAddr) from the Round-robin address generator(560), provides the transmission enable(TxEnb*) signal to the utopia level-2 interface device, and provides a control signal for enabling the multiplexer.
