PURPOSE: An engine protection device is provided to prevent the damage of an engine by interrupting power transmitted to a valve operating equipment and a cam operating equipment. CONSTITUTION: In a diesel engine transmitting rotary force of a crank shaft to a cam shaft through an idler gear(1), an engine protection device includes an idler gear separation element separating the idler gear from a line of power transmission gear from the crank shaft to the cam shaft, an engine rpm sensor(5) sensing the rpm of an engine, and a controller operating the idler gear separation by receiving a signal of the engine rpm sensor if the rpm is more than a threshold rpm, wherein the idler gear separation element includes a protruded rotation part(6) integrately formed with the idler gear, a flange(7) taking the idler gear off from a set of teeth of the power transmission gears, a pneumatic cylinder(9) coupled with the flange by a link(8) to supply operating force of the flange, and a compressed air supply source(10) supplying the air to the pneumatic cylinder.
