PURPOSE: A method for managing the defect area of optical recording medium is provided to record location information with information that a spare area is full, without linear replacement, if a defect area that needs new replacement block is found under the full condition of the spare area in user area. CONSTITUTION: Data are recorded or reproduced in an optical disk(701). Whether a defect block that needs new replacement block is discriminated if the defect block is found(702). It is discriminated whether the defect block is registered in SDL(Secondary Defect List) if the defect block needs new replacement block(703). It is discriminated whether DMA(Defect Management Area) is full(704). It is discriminated whether a spare area is full if the defect block is the registered one is SDL(705). A data of the defect area is recorded in the replacement block of the spare block(706). Location information of the defect block and the replacement block is registered in SDL entry(707). The location information of the defect block is registered in SDL entry with information that the spare area is full(708).
