PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for waiting a call in a mobile communication system are provided to improve a quality of call by outputting an alarm to a user and allowing a call to be reattempted in accordance with a user's intention, and thus enabling the call to be maintained. CONSTITUTION: If an operation is started(S21), it is determined whether a communication is permitted by exchanging information between a base station and terminal(S22). If the communication is permitted, a communication mode is set(S23). It is detected that a terminal is within a coverage area(S24). If not, a base station generates an alarm to a user during a certain time(S25). If the certain time(t1) has not been passed(S26), it is determined that a call maintaining key is inputted from the terminal(S27). If so, a call waiting mode for maintaining a current state is set(S28). Then, a waiting mode time(t2) is measured by the base station and terminal, and it is determined that the waiting mode time(t2) has been passed(S29). If the waiting mode time(t2) is not passed, and at the same time a call reattempting command is inputted from the terminal(S30), it is again determined that the terminal is within a coverage area(S24).
