PURPOSE: An elevator is provided to lift again without being pushed downward after moving down and stopping for avoiding obstacles, to stably move down and to prevent an interference with a rope. CONSTITUTION: An elevator consists of a settlement member (500); a pair of ropes (400,401) fixed to a building; a first control unit (100) winding one rope, in one side of the settlement member; a drive motor (300) rotating one factor of the first control unit; a second control unit (200) winding the other rope, in the other side of the settlement member; a power transmitting device transmitting the power of the drive motor to one factor of the second control unit; and a braking device stopping the settlement member moving down. The settlement member ascends along the ropes and moves down when the drive motor is turned off. The settlement member consists of a horizontal portion (501); a vertical portion (503) extended from the horizontal portion; and a backrest portion (510) connected with the vertical portion with a hinge (502). Frames (520,530) are rotatively connected to both sides of the backrest portion to hold the first and the second control unit. Guide portions (521,531) are fixed to the frames to guide ropes to the backrest portion with plural guide rollers. Thus, the guide portions don't interfere with the ropes. Further, supports (522a,532a) and arm supporters (522,532) are removable from each frame.
